About half of Germany’s electricity generation is coal based, for a large part produced within Germany. The Rhenish mining area just across the border with the Netherlands is an area where lignite is mined in opencast mines. This excursion allows you to take a close look at the way RWE operates these mines.
Practical information: We will leave Utrecht by tourbus at 9:00 and drive to Bergheim where we are expected at 13.30 to start our 2.5 hour tour. On our tour we visit the opencast mine, adjacent recultivated areas and a resettled village. After the tour we make our way back to Utrecht to have dinner and drinks together. Costs for this excursion are about 25 euros (excursion and transport only) collected on the bus. Interested? Send an email to marcpdewit@gmail.com
