On Friday, July 26th, 2024 Young Energy Specialists & Development Cooperation (YES-DC) concluded an insightful event titled Energy Diplomacy: Approaches to Innovation, Sustainability, and Inclusivity in the Hague. This event brought together distinguished speakers and participants to explore diverse strategies in energy diplomacy, with a special focus on cooperation between the Global South and Global North.
The event underscored the importance of energy diplomacy as a tool for addressing global energy challenges. It highlighted how diplomatic efforts can enhance energy infrastructure, promote renewable energy adoption, and mitigate climate change impacts, particularly in developing countries. The discussions emphasized the critical need for collaborative resource-sharing to ensure energy access and security.
A significant portion of the event focused on the roles of youth and women in energy diplomacy. With 1.2 billion youth globally, accounting for 16% of the world’s population, the inclusion of young voices is vital for advocating clean and sustainable energy policies. The discussions highlighted how youth-led advocacy campaigns can influence diplomatic negotiations on climate-related issues and renewable energy development. Additionally, the event explored how women can mediate conflicts over energy resources and foster cooperation between nations, promoting gender-responsive energy strategies to create a more equitable sector.
The event was facilitated by the amiable YES-DC President, Moji Ogundiran. Esteemed speakers from Future Energy Leaders Netherlands Damilola Adeyanju, and Rik van der Vossen shared their nuanced insights, enriching the dialogue on these critical issues. The event concluded with actionable recommendations on utilizing diplomatic channels to facilitate knowledge exchange, investment flows, and technology transfer between the Global South and Global North.
Overall, the event provided a valuable platform for dialogue, collaboration, and action. It reinforced our commitment to harnessing the collective efforts of all stakeholders towards a more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful energy future. The YES-DC President, Mojisola Ogundiran remarked “Uniting diverse voices in energy diplomacy is essential for forging sustainable solutions, fostering global cooperation, and ensuring an equitable energy future for all.”
We extend our gratitude to all participants and look forward to continuing this important conversation.
